WHAT TO EXPECT

THERAPY EXPERIENCE

Once you have completed your consultation, we will be able to gauge if it is a good fit to move forward together on your journey of healing. The initial intake process can take up to 75 minutes and subsequent therapy sessions lasts up to 50 minutes. During the initial intake assessment, you will be asked about what is bringing you to counseling, what your goals are, and important background information. Weekly sessions are best, and it's recommended you commit to 6-8 sessions at minimum for this investment into your healing journey.

During the therapy sessions you are expected to talk about the primary concerns and issues in your life. Some people who are in crisis or extreme distress need more than one session per week, at least until the crisis passes. During the time between sessions, it is beneficial to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records. For therapy to "work," you must be an active participant, both in and outside of the therapy sessions. Every therapy session is unique and is tailored to the individual, including your needs, strengths, and goals. The process is collaborative which means your feedback and dialogue in session about your experience, your progress, and your needs are welcomed at any time throughout our work together.

TREATMENT APPROACH

The main theoretical approach that will be used in session is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is an evidence-based modality that encourages clients to question and examine their recurring thoughts. The goal is to help Clients learn to respond to challenging situations with new, more effective coping skills. This enables Clients to phase out thought patterns that are recognized as negative and unhealthy. In addition, aspects of client-centered therapy, solution focused therapy, and mindfulness to name a few will also be incorporated. My therapeutic style involves being attentive, uplifting, and realistic when needed. I have also found that using my natural humor invites clients to be more open and relaxed. I strive to make the atmosphere comfortable enough to share feelings, doubts, fears, without conviction.

I believe in a healthy balance of meeting clients where they are and gently but firmly challenging when appropriate. I can’t guarantee you that this will be an easy process, however, I can say confidently that with constant encouragement and an occasional gentle push, you will discover new perspectives and creative solutions that will help foster change and growth in your life.
